A Little Help For Stella’s Family

July 17th, 2011 § 7 Comments

Very dear friends of mine, Michi & Aimee, recently received some of the most horrible news I could ever imagine hearing.  You can read all the details at http://stellabrunermethven.com.  A few short weeks ago they arrived at Sick Kids Hospital thinking that their 2 year old daughter (only a few months older than my own daughter) had an inner ear infection.  They left the hospital with a diagnosis of brainstem glioma, a fatal inoperable brain tumour giving her only 3-6 months to live.

They have both chosen to take leave from their jobs and make the most of the short time they have left with Stella Joy.  This has left them with a very limited income.  There is very little that I can do for them and it is breaking my heart.  They have chosen to make the most of the time they have left with Stella and I want to help however I can.  I gave it a lot of thought, and I could  just ask blindly for people to donate a couple of dollars to them so that they would have a few less things to worry about during this time (being able to hire a house cleaner, taking Stella to see family who can’t come to them, day trips, meals and such) and if you’d like to do that, please do so.

The thing is, I bake.  It’s what I do and Michi and Aimee have always enjoyed my baking so it somehow seems appropriate that I have offered Stella and her family a percentage of my total sales (not just the proceeds) from now until August 15th.  You can help them make the most of the time they have left with Stella by placing your order.

Macarons (25% will go to Stella & her family)

Boxes of macarons are available for sale.  Three flavours will be available and once one of the flavours runs out, I will introduce a new one.  The first round of flavours are: Salted Caramel Ganache, Vanilla Bean Strawberry and Hazelnut Praline.

  •   box of 6 – $10
  •   box of 12 – $20
  •   box of 24 – $40

Homemade Marshmallows (25% will go to Stella & her family)

Bags of bite size homemade marshmallows will also be available for only $4

  • Vanilla Bean
  • S’mores
  • Toasted Coconut
  • Various seasonal fruit flavours

Caramels (25% will go to Stella & her family)

Yummy, chewy homemade caramels will be available in mixed flavour bags for only $7

Bags may include:

  • salted caramel
  • various fruity caramels

Cake & Create A Cake Parties

In addition, Stella and her family will receive 10% of all CustomCake orders and/or Create  A Cake decorating parties that are booked, with a deposit, between now and August 15th.

Placing your order

You can place your order by email at info@mollycake.ca or by calling 905-631-9647.  Please note that for macaron, marshmallow and caramel orders, 3 days note may be required.  For cake and party orders, we recommend 3 weeks notice.  The cake and parties only need to be booked within the time frame.

If for any reason, the monies are not required by Stella and her family they will be donated.

Father’s Day Cake Decorating Party

May 30th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Father’s Day is fast approaching – what have you got planned?

Why not join us, with one of the kids, for our Father’s Day Cake Decorating party?!

How does it work?

It’s pretty easy really.  The cost for this event, for yourself and one child, is $35 (please contact us directly for options for more than one child).  Your spot(s) is reserved when you make payment (& space is limited!).  Payment can be made either through email to info@mollycake.ca or directly to either Kathy or myself.  Unfortunately, because space is so limited, we cannot hold spots without payment.

Then, on Saturday, June 18th, you can show up with one of your kids for the party.  The doors will open 10 minutes prior to the party start time. The location of the party is in the Burloak/New St. area of Burlington, ON and directions will be emailed out to all registered participants.

What will we be doing?

You guys will get to decorate an either chocolate or vanilla 6″ round cake in one of two designs, either a bbq, or a shirt (golf shirt or shirt & tie).  The cake will be filled, iced with vanilla buttercream and prepped for decorating and you will learn how to put the final coat of icing on and decorate the cake using fondant, edible markers, texture tools and cutters.

What if I have to cancel?

Cancellations, with full refund, can be made up to June 10.  After that time, no refunds will be given unless we are able to fill your spot.  If we are able to fill your spot, a refund will be provided the same way you paid.  If we are not able to fill your spot, you have two choices; you may a) stop by and pick up the undecorated cakes allotted for you – we will ice them for you, OR b) your payment will be converted to a donation for the Ride To Conquer Cancer and you will receive a tax receipt.

The only exception to the above policy is if we do not meet the minimum required (5 participants) to run one of the sessions and the sessions are merged.  If this happens and, because of the time change, your child(ren) are unable to attend, a full refund will be given.

Noteworthy

We are very much looking forward to this event and are confident that it will sellout early.  However, if that does not happen, a minimum of 5 participants is required for the session.  If the minimum is not met we will be forced to cancel, providing full refunds.  This decision will be made based on the reservations as of Sunday, June 12th.  An email will go out to each registered participant on this day detailing the location of the event.

More importantly, while there are no peanut or nut additives in the cake or icing recipes, this is NOT A PEANUT FREE PREMISIS.  Please be aware that, for this event, we cannot guarantee against any allergies.

Share your Wreckiest Cake Wreck!

May 19th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

I made this cake, before I started decorating cakes, for my son's baptism while sick with the flu. I meant well but ...

Do you know what a Cake Wreck is?  Check out their site for a definition and a few laughs, after that it’s super simple.  Just post a picture of your wreckiest Cake Wreck on the MollyCake Facebook page.  Then, when the contest closes, I’ll move the pictures into a photo album called ‘Your Cake Wrecks’ (along with the story behind the wreck if you shared it!). Then, we’ll open up the album for people to vote for or ‘like’ the wreckiest wrecks.  At the end of the contest, the top 4 wrecks will be awarded prizes.

The Details:

Contest opens: May 18th, 2011

You may start posting your wrecky photos on the MollyCake page now!

Photo Entries must be in by: May 24. 2011, 1pm

No more entries will be accepted after this date … well, at least not for the contest.  Feel free to share just for the fun of it!  Please note: it is not our intention to make anyone feel badly about their well intentioned cake.  This is all in the interest of good fun – and good prizes!  For this reason, we ask that by submitting the photo, you agree that it is a photo of your cake.

Voting begins: May 25, 2011, 12:01am

Tell your friends and family to ‘like’ your page.  Each ‘like’ in the photo album will count as a vote.  You can enter as many cakes as you like, but each cake counts as one entry.

Voting closes: June 2, 2011 at 1pm.

At this time, the winners will be announced.

Prizes

First Prize: a spot for you & one child in our Father’s Day Cake Decorating party which will be held on June 18th @ 10:30am.  (For those who don’t win, details on this event will be posted shortly and spots will be open for sale in about a week.)

Second Prizes:

  1. 1 dozen cupcakes, from For The Love of Cupcakes
  2. $20 off your next MollyCake cake order
  3. Chocolate Pizza, from A Sweet Slice

Choice will be given in the order the names are drawn.

None of the prizes will be delivered, therefore, this contest is open to those that can make arrangements to have their prizes picked up at the agreed upon date/time.

Monster Etiquette: A personal post

March 16th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

MollyCake's son

The Little Monster

My son is learning things so fast these days.  For instance, suddenly he can write his name, his whole, long, 9 letter name almost entirely by himself.  He just sometimes needs a hint at the spelling but he knows it has 2 Ns and 2 As and all the other letters that go in it.  Just 2 short weeks ago, he had no interest in even trying to write his name.  He watches everything you do, and it usually comes back to haunt you at some point – as it does with most kids.  He is just picking up things so quickly and it’s amazing to watch.  Not always fun, but I am often awe struck at his intelligence (as most parents are).

Another example of something he has learned is how to blame someone else for something he has done.  I’m loving this one, really loving it (you can see the sarcasm in that right?).  Why just the other day he was taking a bath and I left him alone for all of 1 minute and when I came back there was a huge puddle of water on the floor.  Apparently the Water Monster came and dumped it out of the tub.  We had seen a couple other such ‘monsters’ in the last month or so but really, n

o biggie.  Now, however, we are seeing multiple said monsters a day!  Why, just today we ran into the Soup Monster who threw a spoonful of his soup over his shoulder just to see where the noodles and soup would land and for good measure the monster also dumped Lily’s bowl of soup all over the table, then we ran into the Milk Monster, who took mouthfuls of milk and, carefully, spit them onto the floor at the top of the stairs to see how big the puddle would get before pouring down the stairs “… like a beautiful waterfall mommy.”  We also ran into the Pull-Up Monster (you don’t want to hear that story!), the Castle Monster and the Pushy Monster.  Yup, this is a day in my life and while I

love it, I am now working on a new lesson with my son that I hope he picks up as quickly as he’s picked up on other stuff.

Monster Etiquette

  • Monsters are not allowed to push little sisters when they join in a game of tag
  • Monsters are not allowed to disrupt others in the household
  • If you invite or bring a monster into the house, you are responsible for it’s behaviour and must clean up after it &/or apologize for it
  • You are responsible for teaching your monster what is acceptable & what is unacceptable behaviour
  • If you cannot control your monster, you must tell it to leave and go home to it’s parents

Do you have something to add to the list?  If any of you have any other ideas on how or what to teach my son regarding proper Monster Etiquette, I’d love to hear it!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

March 2nd, 2011 § 1 Comment

I grew up with Dr. Seuss and I love his books.  There is something about them that is just so whimsical and fun, they get your imagination going like no other.  When I was growing up, if I remember correctly, the household favorite was Green Eggs & Ham.  Or maybe that was just my favorite – I’m not sure.  So many quotes from his books have real life meaning – ‘Oh, the places you’ll go!’ – that you don’t really appreciate until you get older.

What was (is) your favorite Dr. Seuss book?

In honour of his birthday, here are some of my favorite Dr. Seuss cakes that others have done – I can’t wait til someone calls me and orders a Dr. Seuss themed cake! wink, wink, nudge, nudge ;)

St. Patrick’s Day & Cupcakes!

February 28th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

MollyCake Create A Cake St. Paddy's Day Cupcake Decorating PartyWhat have you got going on for the March break?  Here, at MollyCake Create A Cake, we’ve decided to host a green cupcake decorating party for the kids, while you have the opportunity to take a well deserved 1 hour break!  Be as productive, or not, as you wish during your hour, but you can rest assured that your child(ren) will be having a great time decorating cupcakes and, especially for the older kids, learning new tips and tricks as they go.

How does it work?

It’s pretty easy really.  Your spot(s) is reserved when you make payment (& space is limited!) either through paypal or directly to either Kathy or myself.  Unfortunately, because space is so limited, we cannot hold spots without payment.

Then, on Thursday, March 17th, you can drop your kid(s) off for the party.  If you’re feeling festive, dress them in green, but make sure it’s something they can get a bit messy, just in case!  The doors will open, for each group, 10 minutes prior to the party start time. The location of the party is in the Burloak/New St. area of Burlington, ON and directions will be emailed out to all registered participants.

Can I really just drop my kid(s) off and leave?

For the younger group, the parents/caregivers have the option of staying if they wish, but it’s not necessary.  You know the needs of your child(ren) best so you can decide what will work for you.  For the older group, we ask that the parents take advantage of the hour.  There is a Starbucks just 5 minutes away and if you want to get some errands run, there is the new outlet mall and grocery store just up the road.

What will my kids be doing?

Your kids will be having a great time learning a technique or two on how to ice their cupcakes to prepare for fondant decorations.  Then we will work with them to make fondant decorations for their cupcakes using modeling tools and cutters.  We will have a couple of design options for them to try, or we will help them to go with their own design ideas.  At the end of the hour, each participant is going home with 6 decorated cupcakes to share!  They will each get 3 chocolate and 3 green (vanilla) cupcakes to take home.

What if I have to cancel?

Cancellations, with full refund, can be made up to March 7th.  After that time, no refunds will be given unless we are able to fill your spot.  If we are able to fill your spot, a refund will be provided the same way you paid.  If we are not able to fill your spot, you have two choices; you may a) stop by and pick up the undecorated cupcakes allotted for your child(ren) – we will ice them for you, OR b) your payment will be converted to a donation for the 2011 Ride To Conquer Cancer and you will receive a tax receipt.

The only exception to the above policy is if we do not meet the minimum required (5 participants) to run one of the sessions and the sessions are merged.  If this happens and, because of the time change, your child(ren) are unable to attend, a full refund will be given.

Notworthy

We are very much looking forward to this event and are confident that it will sellout early.  However, if that does not happen, a minimum of 5 participants is required for each session – if the minimum is not met, we will combine the sessions.  This decision will be made based on the reservations as of Sunday, March 13th.  An email will go out to each registered participant on this day detailing the location of the event and confirming the time of their session.

More importantly, while there are no peanut or nut additives in the cupcake or icing recipes, this is NOT A PEANUT FREE PREMISIS.  Please be aware that, for this event, we cannot guarantee against any allergies.

What’s a Cutie Cake?

February 16th, 2011 § 4 Comments

As you know, I do custom cake creations in various sizes and shapes – the kinds of cakes the grocery stores don’t do.  But do you know that I also offer MollyCake Cutie Cakes?  Cutie Cakes are perfect for smaller occassions that you want to be special, but you don’t need the whole 9 yards.  The price depends on the level of customization and detail work on the cake.

What is a Cutie Cake?

A Cutie Cake can be decorated in one of our basic designs: Seeing Spots, Stand Up Stripes or Fantasy Flowers.  Or, you just tell us the theme of the party, and we’ll come up with a cake that will highlight the party.  You can upgrade from a 2-layer to a 3-layer or from round to a square cake.  You want it to look a bit topsy turvey?  No problem!  Carving a simple shape?  No problem!  Also, the Cutie Cake comes on a simple, undecorated silver cake board, unlike our custom cake creations that come on a fully decorated board that tells the full story of the cake.

How many people will my Cutie Cake feed?

  • 2-layer 6″ round – approx. 8 ppl
  • 3-layer 6″ round – approx 10-12 ppl
  • 2-layer 6″ square – approx 12 ppl
  • 3-layer 6″ square – approx. 15 ppl

How do I order my Cutie Cake?

Just send us a note or give us a call at 905.631.9647 and if we don’t answer, we’ll get back to you, usually within a couple hours.  Ideally we’d have a minimum of 1 weeks notice, but sometimes, depending on what you are looking for, we can accommodate orders with less notice.
